This year - 2003 marks the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from St. Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Ocean.

The journey of the Corps of Discovery, under the command of Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, across the West to the Pacific Ocean and back in the years 1804–06 was investigative and hazardous.

While traveling to the Pacific Ocean, members of the Journey kept detailed accounts of their routes, both spatially and temporally.  The detailed Journals, “The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition” reflects their experience.  They filled hundreds of notebook pages with observations of the geography, Indian tribes, and natural history.  There are descriptions of frigid winter encampments, the party's encounters with and observations of area Indian tribes, plants and rock structures.

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Global Positions, Inc. (a Montana-based Mapping Company) has designed an informative and beautiful map depicting the Corps of Discovery’s travels through the present-day Montana.   Although their travels through present-day Montana were only a part of the overall travels, it was in present-day Montana where Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark split up - each exploring different potential routes across this huge geographic area.

This stunning and comprehensive map reveals a detailed satellite image of Montana - never seen before.  The detailed satellite view of Montana (recorded during the early summer months) reveals the variations in topography and vegetation across this vast and beautiful region.  Superimposed upon the satellite image are the routes of Captains Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, John Ordway, Patrick Gass and others who traveled with this adventurous group of explorers.  Click on the map above for a detailed version...
