Course Overview and Components: (16 Hours of Material)
01. Effective Learning StrategiesThis lecture provides provides strategies that can be used to help in the learning process. The instructor provides learning strategies for mastering concepts of GIS software and acquiring skills.
Length: 13 minutes
02. Introduction to GIS
This lecture provides an introduction to GIS and
presents the concepts upon which this technology is based. Through lectures and exercises, the student will achieve an understanding and appreciation of GIS.
Length: 1 hour, 39 minutes
03. Finding a Hidden Treasure using ArcGIS
In this tutorial we dive "head first" into ArcGIS
Desktop and use clues to locate a hidden treasure. This fast-pace tutorial supports analytical decision making, data conversion, planning, and analysis
Length: 1 hour, 14 minutes
04. What is ArcGIS?
This lecture provides an overview of ArcGIS, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS On-Line, and ArcGIS mobile. This modest lecture should be particularly useful for students who are new to ArcGIS.
Length: 37 minutes
05. Exploring ArcCatalog
This tutorial provides students with a comprehensive overview of ArcCatalog. The goal of this tutorial is to explore the ArcCatalog interface and to gain understanding of how to use this application effectively.
Length: 1 hour, 14 minutes
06. Creating a File GeoDatabase (Part 1 of 2)
This lecture is the first part of two-part series on creating a GeoDatabase. During this lecture, students use ArcCatalog to pre-organize spatial assets,
project data to a new spatial referencing system, define the spatial referencing system of an asset,
and create a file Geodatabase.
Length: 1 hour, 7 minutes
07. Creating a File GeoDatabase (Part 2 of 2)
This tutorial is the second part of a two-part lecture on creating a GeoDatabase. The goal of this tutorial is to explore models and create a file GeoDatabase that includes domains and subtypes.
Length: 1 hour, 29 minutes
08. Exploring ArcMap As part of mastering ArcMap, it is important to be comfortable with the interface and associated components. The goal of
this tutorial is to explore the ArcMap graphical user interface (GUI), discover features and components that comprise this application, and use tools to perform GIS tasks.
Length: 1 hour, 45 minutes
09. Cartography and Making Maps
The purpose of this lecture is to provide an introduction to cartography and making maps with ArcGIS Desktop. Cartographers try to find the most effective way of using color, shape, and pattern to communicate information about spatial features and spatial relationships.
Length: 1 hour, 47 minutes
10. Editing and Creating Data with ArcMap
The objective of this tutorial is to explore the ArcMap editing environment, editing interface, and key workflows. Students will use the intuitive, sketch-based editing environment to create and edit feature geometry and attributes.
Length: 1 hour, 30 minutes
11. Exploring Tables, Graphs, and Reports
This tutorial provides instruction on working with tables, exploring table properties, defining new tables, adding new fields to tables, populating fields with attributes, and generating graphs and reports from tables. The field calculator is explored.
Length: 1 hour, 35 minutes
12. Image Registration and Transformations This tutorial provides instruction on georeferencing raster images and performing spatial adjustments and spatial transformation on vector data
.
Length: 1 hour, 1 minute
13. Exploring Simple Spatial Analysis The objective of this tutorial is to explore spatial analysis concepts and examples using an ArcView license of ArcGIS Destkop. Analytical techniques used to determine the spatial distribution or spatial relationship between spatial variables is often referred to as spatial analysis.
Length: 1 hour, 48 minutes

"We believe passionately that education is essential to economic growth. Education facilitates the development of our natural capacity for knowledge and wisdom. Education is a fundamental human right and essential for the exercise of all other human rights. We also believe such universal access to affordable ArcGIS Desktop training is mission-critical for today’s spatial problem solvers."
Using the KnowGIS course, participants learn how to use ArcMap, ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox, and explore how these applications work in concert to organize, display, analyze, and present geographic information assets. This course covers GIS concepts as well as specific components and tools in the ArcView, license of ArcGIS Desktop. Participants learn how to:- Organize spatial data, - Query a GIS database, - Perform selections, - Edit and modify spatial data, - Update attribute tables, - Perform calculations using the field calculator, - Design and develop a File Geodatabase, - Register and rectify raster images, - Transform vector data , - Project spatial data, - Create maps and charts, - Generate reports, - Explore spatial analysis.
The course is taught by Mr. Jere P. Folgert. Folgert has over 21 years of GIS experience, has a masters of science degree in GIS from the University of Edinburgh, U.K., became an ESRI Certified instructor in 1999, and is the recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Award: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Award.
