Rocky Mountain National Park is an amazing place.  The snow-covered peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park rise above sub-alpine valleys and clear lakes. Many humans come here using the help of the internal combustion engine.  Animals (and some humans) arrive here on foot to gain solitude.  Its craggy mountains carve out a skyline that captures the mind's eye and serves as both guardian and passageway to the west. One-third of the park is above tree line, which is why these peaks and valleys have been set aside as a national park. The 14,255-foot summit of Longs Peak is beautiful on a clear day. In addition, there are 71 peaks here that top out above 12,000 feet.

Established on January 26, 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is a showcase of the magnificence of the Rocky Mountains. During the Ice Age when massive glaciers were grinding the landscape, shaping the meadows and peaks, this area was a surly land. It was not until some 11,000 years ago that humans began venturing into its valleys and mountains. With elevations ranging from 8,000 feet in the wet, grassy valleys to 14,259 feet at the weather-ravaged top of Longs Peak, a visitor to the park has opportunities for countless breathtaking experiences and adventures.

The Its thought that French trappers and the Spanish explorers came here and skirted the current park boundaries in their wilderness forays. The United States government acquired the park's original 350+ square miles in the creative Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Major Stephen H. Long and his expedition forces avoided these rugged barricades. Long was never nearer than 40 miles to the peak named for him.   In 1820, the Long Expedition officially recorded the location of the park's highest mountain even though Major Stephen Long was never closer than 40 miles to that peak that bears his name. He later echoed  that the area that the plains were "extremely disagreeable" and "wholly unfit for cultivation".

There is a gigantic amount of land to explore here! Spectacular mountains and beautiful hikes. Get out there!  Take a hike.  350 plus miles of hiking and walking trails you could spend a lifetime exploring this area! Careful on the steep rocky trails, and walk softly on the alpine tundra and cast a line into the high-mountain lakes. During the spring and summer months the area is carpeted with wildflowers. Spend time exploring the meadows and hillsides as they are splashed with botanical color. Autumn visitors can experience the change of seasons and view the golden-yellow aspens or enjoy the rowdier antics of the elk rut during mating season..

Ranger-led activities are an entertaining way to learn more about your surroundings. Plan some time to acclimate to the high altitude and come find your adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park.
