Are you looking for a map series that you can use to
plan your hike in Southern Utah (including the Bryce Canyon Area)? We can provide you
a seamless map
-
on CD-ROM - that depicts a digital version of the well-known and accurate USGS paper maps
(The CD-ROM contains the equivalent of 132 - 1:24,000 USGS topographic
paper maps. Wow!). These maps are often used as reference maps for field or
office work and define a specific piece of geography. The map show
contours, cities, vegetation, lakes, rivers, trails, roads, railroads and
other spatial features.
The Escalante Mountains are located northeast of Bryce
Canyon National Park. The Colorado River and Lake Powell mark the eastern
border of remote, sparsely populated Garfield County. Other geographical
features include the Henry Mountains in the northeast and the forested, high
plateaus in the western half of the county. The two areas have eleven peaks
over 10,000 feet. The Sevier River system runs north through western
Garfield County, and the Escalante River empties into the Colorado.
The county has several outstanding natural landmarks, including Bryce Canyon
National Park, the Escalante Mountains, Boulder Mountain, the Henry
Mountains, and Escalante Canyon; in addition, there is the Colorado River
and Lake Powell, which form the eastern boundary of the county. Bryce
Canyon is filled with incredible red rock formations including brilliant red
sandstone hoodoos and mazes to open amphitheaters and lush green forests,
Bryce Canyon National Park inspires awe. Grand Staircase/Escalante
National Monument includes land with a wide variety of topographical
features

Boulder Mountain are located near the towns of Boulder and
Teasdale, Utah. This rugged part of Utah provides many recreation
opportunities and is an awesome learning environment anyone who loves
the outdoors. Several species of trout can be found in the Boulder Mountain
and the area surrounding the town of Boulder. There are dozens of small
lakes and beaver ponds throughout the Boulder Mountain range. Several guide
services operate here. In the Boulder Mountain range west of Capitol Reef
National Park and north of the Grand Staircase. Here, the elevation ranges
from 7,400 to 1 1,000 feet, and fishing is open from April to October.
Cutthroat and brook trout are within easy casting distance along the
shoreline of the small lakes and beaver ponds. Larger lakes hold the elusive
trophy-size trout for which this region is famous. A float tube or rowboat
may provide an advantage on these lakes.
Boulder Creek, located in Garfield County is a true gem. This stream flows
off the east side of Boulder Mountain. It's lower reaches are located on BLM
lands and the upper portions are located on the Dixie National Forest.
Private lands occur around the town of Boulder. Access can be gained to the
stream on public lands by roads in a number of areas but much of the stream
can only be reached by hiking. Brown trout are found in the lower end of the
stream, with rainbow trout being predominant in mid-elevation areas, and
brook trout and cutthroat trout occupying the upper elevation areas.
Boulder Mountain’s remote location has resulted in few anglers who know of
and have experienced its pristine streams. Exploring and fishing a small
Boulder Mountain lake can be a pleasant and rewarding experience during the
late spring, summer and fall. Cutthroat and brook trout are abundant
in these undisturbed clear mountain waters. The small, clear creeks
that flow and fall off the mountai, spraying clear arrays of mist, are some
of the most unforgettable water flows on earth. Enjoy the high mountain
lakes tucked up under massive volcanic cliffs.

Driving through Utah is a marvelous way to experience its impressive natural
scenery. Capitol Reef National Park features colorful cliffs, immense domes,
and twisting canyons. The panoramic views from Skyline Drive in Manti-LaSal
National Forest make it one of the most scenic drives in the nation. And,
the broken wilderness of sculptured, painted rock earn the Valley of
Cathedrals its name. There are a variety of enjoyable Utah driving routes.
Canyon Country Drives include : Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National
Park and Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument.
Utah, includes about half of the Aquarius Plateau of South Central Utah in
Wayne and Garfield counties. Utah Scenic Byway 12 traverses the eastern side
of the mountain from Torrey through Boulder and on to Escalante. The
mountain are located to the west of Capitol Reef National Park and consists
of steep slopes and cliffs with over 50,000 acres (200 km²) of rolling
forest and meadowlands on the top. It is the maximum timbered plateau in
North America. A series of unpaved backcountry roads and jeep trails supply
access to the top during the brief snow free time, which is usually only a
few months from July to September. Forested Boulder Mountain and the rest of
the Aquarius Plateau are carved by mountain streams and speckled with alpine
lakes. Wild trout -- Brown, Brook, Cutthroat, Rainbow and Hybrids -- are
copious throughout the area. Many folks enjoy dropping a dry fly in hopes of
catching a Brook trout or Brown. Try casting to wild Rainbows and Browns on
heavily wooded streams. Southern Boulder lakes such as Deer Creek Lake are
terrific for larger cutthroat. Posey Lake and Lower Bowns offer nearby
camping and fun for families. All in all, there are about 60 fishable lakes
on the mountain. Discovering them can be half the fun. Best of all, you'll
be able to do so in relative solitude in this mostly undiscovered area.

Calf Creek, located in Garfield County is another gem of a stream. This
clear, spring-fed stream is located between the towns of Escalante and
Boulder in a beautiful red rock setting. It is entirely located on BLM lands
with a campground at the lower end of the stream. The upper reaches of the
stream is accessible by trail which ends at Calf Creek Falls, a spectacular
waterfall. The stream is about 3 miles in length and contains wild brown
trout. Beaver are plentiful in the canyon and much of the stream has been
impounded by small dams. This area can be very hot in mid-summer and
difficult to fish. Utah's wild trout include Brown trout which are are
native to Europe and western Asia. They were introduced into the United
States in the late 1800s. They seek overhead cover and dark shady places in
streams. They have a reputation of being hard to catch, but are most
vulnerable to angling in small streams. They tolerate lower elevation areas
and warmer water better than most other trout. Rainbow trout are native to
the west coast of North America and have been introduced into Utah. They are
widely produced in both public and private hatcheries, but wild populations
thrive in small streams. They often feed in open pools and runs which makes
them susceptible to a well presented fly.
Brook trout are native to the eastern United States and Canada, and are
actually members of the char family rather than a true trout. They can
become abundant in cold streams and spring creeks, especially in headwater
areas and are usually less abundant in lower, warmer portions of streams.
They are known for their brilliant coloration.
Cutthroat trout are the only trout native to the intermountain west and are
often called "natives" by local fishermen. A number of subspecies are
recognized from different geographic areas of the west. Bonneville cutthroat
trout and Colorado River cutthroat trout are both native to southern Utah,
and are still found in some streams in the Bonneville basin and the Colorado
River basin, respectively. Large numbers of cutthroat trout do not tolerate
competition with other trout very well and are easily displaced. They are
susceptible to over-fishing and can hybridize with rainbow trout.

Bryce Canyon, famous for its worldly unique geology,
consists of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the
eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah. The erosional
force of frost-wedging and the dissolving power of rainwater have shaped the
colorful limestone rock of the Claron Formation into bizarre shapes
including slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called "hoodoos."
Day-hiking trails at Bryce Canyon Include:
Backcountry Hikes:
The Under-the-Rim Trail extends 23 miles from Bryce Point to Rainbow Point
and has eight backcountry campsites. The Riggs Spring Loop Trail (8.8 miles
round trip) from Yovimpa Point has four backcountry sites. Both trails drop
below the rim of the plateau and lead through forested areas. A backcountry
permit is required for all overnight hiking.
From Red Canyon, drive east over Boulder Mountain to Hanksville, UT. You'll
